PSM will recommend the use of a standard fastener to meet customer specific applications whenever possible, however sometimes a special part is required to meet a specific size, performance or strength requirement. In many cases the total cost of the fastener application will be evaluated by taking only the piece price into account, when in fact there are other factors to be considered, such as material handling as well as the fastener installation time. If PSM is involved at the design phase our application engineers will fully optimize the fastener application and provide the most cost-effective solution to our customer.

Sample & Prototype Manufacturing

PSM uses a range of advanced equipment including CNC machines to produce initial samples for performance testing and pre-production prototypes.

When the quantity is large or when parts are for a "Production Part Approval Process" (PPAP), PSM will use "production intent equipment".

Customer Drawings

PSM can supply customer drawings on request, allowing product and recommended hole size to be checked. They allow parts to be checked on receipt of order and prior to installation to ensure the correct part is always fitted.

Fastener Installation

PSM has a range of installation equipment, allowing production installation conditions to be replicated. The installed fasteners can then be tested for performance.

Fastener Performance Testing

PSM Technical Centers are equipped with a wide range of test equipment to allow the performance of our parts to be tested against customer requirements.

Fastener Performance Reporting

On completion of fastener performance testing, PSM provides a detailed test report. The report contains the background to the tests, method of installation and testing, detailed results and any recommendations or conclusion from the tests.

3D Models

Today designers produce 3D assemblies of their components to ensure "fit and function". To aid this process, PSM can "on request" supply 3D models of its fasteners. They can then be inserted into customers assembly models, to give an accurate representation of the fastener.

Sample Preparation For Hardness Testing And Microstructure Analysis
Prior to testing the hardness of fasteners and analyzing the material structure, samples have to be cut , mounted and polished. PSM uses a range of equipment to ensure the quality of prepared sample and accuracy of results obtained.
Hardness Testing
PSM has a range of hardness test equipment, allowing customers supplied components to be tested to determine the most suitable fasteners for the application.
Fasteners case depth, surface hardness and core hardness can also be checked using a micro-hardness test machine.
Material Microstructure Analysis
Many Sheet Metal Fasteners are hardened to ensure they correctly "clinch" when press fitted into the host sheet metal component. In addition to hardness testing, PSM can analyze the grain structure to ensure the heat treatment process has been correctly controlled.
Plating Thickness Measurement And Element Analysis
Most fasteners are plated to prevent corrosion, PSM uses "sate of the art" X-ray fluorescence (XRF) measuring equipment to determine the plating thickness and for element analysis.
ROHS Analysis
To ensure conformance to RoHS standards, PSM has its own "in-house" test capability. The presence of restricted substances such as Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), Mercury (Hg) and Hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) can be detected and measured in ppm.
Salt Spray Testing
Salt spray testing is a standardized test method used to measure the corrosion resistance of coated samples. PSM has "in-house" equipment allowing NSS, ASS & CASS to be tested to ISO and ASTM B standards.
